The Chamber of Commerce wrote to Newport town council asking them to take the appropriate action to give his Royal Highness Prince Arthur of Connaught, a fitting welcome on his forthcoming visit to open the new lock of the Alexandra Docks.

A number of labourers laying the new Post Office cable at Alexandra Dock came out on strike demanding a wage increase from 6d to 6.5d an hour.
