THREE schools came together this week to perform some of Shakespeare’s most well-known plays.

Glan Usk Primary school was the only primary school to take part in the annual Shakespeare School Festival, which saw Llanwern Comprehensive and Risca Comprehensive schools take part in putting on a Shakespeare production in the city.

Shakespeare School Festival is a charity that rents out theatres across the UK for schools to put on their own Shakespeare performances.

It aims to bring the enchantment of Shakespeare to thousands of children.

About 35 pupils aged ten and 11 from Glan Usk Primary School took part in a performance of Much Ado About Nothing on Wednesday night at Newport’s Riverfront Theatre.

Pupil Jacob Murdock, ten, played Benedick in the show and Isabelle Foster, 10, played Beatrice, while a technical team of five students took care of lighting and sound.

Teacher Rajvi Glasbrook-Griffith said the show had been an “absolute success” with an audience of about 400 relatives and friends turning out to support the students on their big night.

The school, which has taken part in the event for the past four years, believes it helps to boost the confidence of their pupils as well as build on their literacy skills.

Rhys Shakesheff, ten, who was involved in the show, said it “felt amazing” and that the show was “one of his proudest moments”.
