TWO Newport secondary schools have featured in a list of the top 10 performing schools in Wales.

Bassaleg School and Caerleon Comprehensive have featured in the top 10 state secondary schools in Wales produced by the Sunday Times Parent Power. Bassaleg was ranked the second best performing school in Wales with 63.8 per cent of pupils achieving A* to B at A-Levels and 43.9 per cent of GCSE pupils gaining A* to A grades.

The school has improved its national ranking from 191 in 2013 to 171 in 2014. Caerleon Comprehensive School is ranked ninth in Wales with 53.8 per cent of pupils achieving A* to B grades at A-Level and 35.1 per cent gaining A* to A grades at GCSE.

The school has dropped from being ranked 260 nationally to 308. The Parent Power is now in its 22nd year of publication and rankings in the secondary school league tables are determined by the percentage of entries gaining A* to B grades at A-level this summer and the percentage of entries returning A* and A grades at GCSE.

Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls has been ranked the fourth best performing from the independent secondary schools in Wales with 77.9 per cent of pupils achieving A* to B at A-Level and 74.6 achieving A* to A at GCSE. Monmouth School is ranked sixth with the school gaining a national ranking of 184 in 2014.

Rougemont School in Newport has been ranked ninth in the independent school list and has improved its national ranking to 279 from 272.
