AN APPLICATION to demolish an existing building near Junction 26 of the M4 in Newport and replace it with four new two-bedroom flats has been thrown out.
A previous planning application to demolish 26a Glassworks Cottages in the Shaftesbury area of the city and build nine one and two-bedroom flats was refused by Newport City Council in 2015 on a number of grounds including the scale of the development and the small size of the proposed apartments themselves.
Although the application was resubmitted, this time with four two-bedroom flats, the council again turned it down earlier this month, again citing the scale of the development and the impact on people already living in the area.
In its decision the planning department also said there would be “an inadequate level” of outdoor space available to people living in the new flats.
Concerns were also raised around the risk of flooding to the proposed new flats.
