COUNCILLORS have come out in opposition to a petrol station’s plans to sell alcohol 24/7.

Morrisons Daily Petrol Fuelling Station, in Azalea Road, in Rogerstone, Newport, has submitted an application to Newport City Council to be able to sell alcohol 24 hours a day.

In the application, submitted on December 16, the petrol station is also requesting to be able to sell fast food between 11pm and 5pm.

However, Rogerstone Councillor Chris Evans and Graig Councillor David Williams have raised concerns.

Cllr Williams said: “I don’t think it’s appropriate.

“We do not need any more outlets where drink is available 24 hours a day. It isn’t helping the weakest in our society, they do not need more chances to buy alcohol.”

He said that the licence could cause disruption to residents.

Cllr Evans, who raised an objection to the council after Rogerstone residents approached him about the matter, said that alcohol being made available 24 hours from a petrol station doesn’t send out the right message.

He said: “There are other vendors in the area selling alcohol and there’s no market need for a petrol station selling alcohol 24/7

“The area where this petrol station is, is popular with youths, who meet at the nearby McDonalds. There is evidence already of excessive alcohol consumption from litter picks - a vendor selling alcohol 24/7 could be a magnet for anti-social behaviour.”

Cllr Evans said that, as the application is for a general licence, single cans could be sold.

He said: “Studies have showed these drinks encourage irresponsible drinking. If a license is given, will Morrisons publicly pledge to only sell alcohol priced at market rate, without discounts and further pledge not to sell single cans?”
