UPDATED: Newport County confirm Peterborough United bid for striker Conor Washington

South Wales Argus: Peterborough United bid for Newport County striker Conor Washington Peterborough United bid for Newport County striker Conor Washington

LEAGUE One promotion hopefuls Peterborough United are trying to sign Newport County AFC striker Conor Washington.

The Argus can confirm that Posh, who dumped Newport out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, want the 21-year old striker and have been in contact with the Exiles.

It is understood that Peterborough director Barry Fry has tabled more than one bid for the former St Ives forward, but Newport have so far held firm as they seek a larger fee than has been offered.

Newport don’t want to lose the striker, but have a policy of not standing in a players’ way if a club further up the Football League pyramid come calling.

Washington has scored seven goals for the Exiles this term and Newport would want time to find a replacement and ensure a sell-on clause, as well as receiving a fee that would smash their transfer record. They are in an especially strong position as Washington signed a new contract earlier this season.

Ironically, Posh could’ve had Washington for a nominal fee, but he was rejected by the club following a trial just a few weeks before he was signed by Newport in October 2011.

News of the bid was made public this morning and Newport are understood to be angry that negotiations are now in the public domain.

Edinburgh met the media today for his weekly briefing.

“We have received an offer, Conor knows about it, we’ve spoken, it’s a good offer, but it’s far from a done deal yet,” he told the Argus.

“I’ve got to do what is right for the boy and the football club.”

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson didn’t deny his interest at his own press briefing today.

“Conor is a player we might be interested in,” he said.

Stay where you are Connor. The grass is seldom greener and all that glistens is not gold. You have a big part to play for County over the next few years, don't throw it away for a handful of promises that will almost certainly not materialize. You have found a solid club that is going places-stick with it.

JE confirms Peteboro's offer for Conor Washington. Quite fair but I sincerely hope that Washington's move to Peterboro would remain a fiction story.

He might not have a say in the matter if they're offering a big fee, and Peterborough have a history of doing just that. He is from that area as well I believe. If he does go for a huge fee, at least it gives us scope to bring in players who can hit the ground running straight away and hopefully get a winning run going again.

Best of luck to CW whatever happens.

No surprise to fans who have seen Connor improve immeasurably in past year and is sure to get a lot better. If County get the right offer they won't be able to stand in his way and he'll go with all our good wishes.
