We must cut out the errors, admits County boss

NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh says his side need to cut out individual errors if they are to maintain their League Two promotion push.

County were beaten 3-1 at Bristol Rovers on Saturday, meaning they have taken just one point from a possible nine against relegation contenders this month.

Defeat at a wet and wild Memorial Stadium courtesy of goals from Kaid Mohamed, Eliot Richards and John-Joe O’Toole followed a 3-3 draw at Accrington Stanley and a shock 2-1 home reverse against basement boys Northampton Town.

The Exiles are now seven points away from the play-off places with a game in hand.

“Right now things don’t seem to be going our way,” said Edinburgh.

“There were a lot of positives to come out of it. My players gave everything and on another day we would have won the game.

“But individually there were a few who were disappointed and they held their hands up.

“We need to cut out the errors because we’re playing well without getting the breaks at the moment. Without those individual errors we’ll be fine.”

Edinburgh refused to blame the terrible conditions for Staurday’s defeat, instead pointing to the crucial timing of the goals his side conceded either side of half-time and a killer third in the 90th minute.

“It was two different halves,” said the Exiles boss. “We did very well first half but unfortunately we conceded that late goal and in the second half I thought we were in a different country.

“It was very difficult and things didn’t go for us. Take nothing away from Bristol Rovers but I didn’t think there was much between the sides.

“We were disappointed with the timing of the goals but once we got to 2-1 it looked like we were going to get back into the game.

“Individually players have held their hands up and said they can do better but Lee Minshull’s hit the post, Rene Howe hit the bar so we came close.

“I thought we defended ever so well and put our bodies on the line in awful conditions but the timing of the goals were crucial.

“If we’d have gone in at 0-0 we certainly wouldn’t have had to chase the game.”

Edinburgh also bemoaned further bad luck with injuries ahead of Tuesday’s home clash with Plymouth Argyle and Friday’s trip to Southend United.

Danny Crow, Ismail Yakubu and Lee Minshull are doubts but Adam Chapman returns from suspension and new signing Shaun Jeffers will feature if international clearance comes through in time.

He added: “We’re a little bit light in numbers; Crowy pulled a groin a week ago, Ismail had a fall on his back on Friday and Lee Minshull got a bad blow on his shin.”

He must have watched a different game to me in the wet and cold. To paraphrase Brian Clough "we didn't really get a kick" and that particularly applies to Jolley. Could the goalie also be given some coaching on the tactics of goal kicks?

Yakubu seems to pick up too many minor injuries. We'e not the same at the back without him.

8 goals conceded against Accrington, Northampton and BristolR. Its another January shambles - lucky County didnt play a good team !. County have plenty of good midfielders but defenders that cant defend and strikers that cant score. Playoffs are a big ask now but strong characters in this squad so they can still turn it around.

If Justin thinks that County are "playing well" then I am dismayed by such complacency.
In the last three games County have been woeful and most certainly not playing well against the worst teams in the league.
Some of the players and you know who I mean, have been allowed to drift.
I would have expected stronger words from the manager after yesterday's shambles. Time to use the hairdryer!
County players seem alarmingly prone to injury too.
We need a goalscorer by Friday cut off and that is the stark truth.
