St Ives Town set to benefit from Conor Washington transfer

NON-LEAGUE St Ives Town are set to benefit from Conor Washington’s impending transfer from Newport County AFC to Peterborough United.

The Cambridge News reports that club will receive 20 per cent of the sell-on fee as part of the deal that took Washington from Westwood Road to Rodney Parade in October 2012.

A fee has been agreed between County and Posh, with just personal terms and a medical to be concluded today.

“It’s a once-in-a-liftime thing, to have a lad come through as a 16-year-old and make it into the Football League,” said St Ives joint-manager Jez Hall.

“He used to win games single-handedly for us and he’s gone to Newport and shown exactly what he’s about. I understand three or four clubs were sniffing around him.

“We’re all really pleased for the lad.”

Hall, who saw his team draw 3-3 at Marlow on Saturday, expects the money the club will be due will be used to improve the club’s pitch and clubhouse with the possibility of some of the funds going into the playing budget.

“It really is brilliant,” he continued.

“The club is very stable and run well with good revenue from the supporters. It’s a healthy club so this will be a real bonus for us. More importantly, we’re all really happy for Conor. He’s a great lad and it’s fantastic to see him doing so well.

“I suspect some of the money will be used on the pitch and to tidy up the clubhouse. We’re not going to throw money at players.

“We’re quite happy with how we work. It’s more important to do some work around the club.”

Is'nt it great to see one of the small clubs getting some well needed cash. Good luck to St Ives. And good luck to young Washington.
