NEW STRIKER Shaun Jeffers believes he can fire the goals to make Newport County AFC fans say “Conor who?”

Jeffers switches to Rodney Parade from Peterborough United as a makeweight in the deal that sees Washington head to London Road.

The highly-rated youngster joins the Exiles despite interest from other clubs and is determined to make his mark in a similar fashion to Washington who will net County about £500,000 in addition to them securing a sell-on fee that could be worth much more.

The former England U19 striker feels he’s joining exactly the right club at the right time.

“This is a great move for me, I played at Rodney Parade against Newport in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and I was very impressed,” he said.

“I haven’t had as many opportunities as I’d have liked at Peterborough, but this move is ideal because I’m joining a big club who have a lot of faith in me.

“I’ve become a more resilient person in sitting on the sidelines, but now I’m ready to show what I can do.”

Jeffers believes he can add a new dimension to the County attack, though it's unclear whether or not he's eligible for tonight’s home clash with Plymouth Argyle as the Exiles looked to beat the registration deadline.

“I think my strengths are my finishing, pace and my touch and hopefully I can show that,” he said.

Jeffers is confident Rodney Parade is the right place for him.

“I expected to move on this month, but there were a few teams interested and talking to Peterborough,” he said.

“But when I spoke to the gaffer (Justin Edinburgh) he really sold to me what the club wanted to achieve and made me feel wanted.

“That was just what I wanted and needed to hear.”

Newport boss Edinburgh is also convinced Jeffers can fill the void left by Washington.

The 21-year old inked his 18-month deal with Newport yesterday afternoon.

The 6ft 1ins striker started his career at Coventry City making just six appearances before joining Peterborough in October last year after loan spells at Cheltenham Town and Cambridge United.

The player has earned two England under-19 caps and scored three goals for Posh – the last coming against his former club Coventry on Boxing Day.

Edinburgh said: “We need to make sure the club and the squad are looked after when these situations arise.

“Whilst we recognise this is an excellent opportunity for Conor, we have to continue our progression on and off the pitch and the deal will allow us to do that.

“I am delighted to welcome Shaun Jeffers to the club, he is a player I have admired for a while and he has the potential to score the goals to maintain our promotion push.”
