PETERBOROUGH United manager Darren Ferguson says the transfer of Newport County AFC striker Conor Washington, which sees Shaun Jeffers go the other way, is a good deal for all concerned.

The moves should be officially rubber-stamped today and Ferguson said: “We only gave Shaun a contract until the end of this season so the deal at Newport is a good one for him. I couldn’t see Shaun breaking into our team before then.

“I like Conor. I know we had him in the building before, but he wasn’t ready then. He’s had the benefit of regular training and the boost of scoring regular goals at Newport so he comes to us now as an established footballer.

“He ticks all the boxes for me. He’s young, he’s hungry and he was interested in progressing his career than he was in money.

“Conor has good pace and he will play off the shoulder of the last defender. He will be involved at Sheffield United on Wednesday but he won’t start as my two strikers (Britt Assombalonga and Nicky Ajose) are in great form and scoring goals.”
