County stars sweating on new contracts for next season
UP to 13 members of the Newport County AFC squad are playing for their future at the club, starting at Chesterfield tomorrow.
County have just seven games left in League Two and, with his side nine points above the relegation zone and ten points off the play-off positions, manager Justin Edinburgh is already planning for next season.
Mike Flynn and David Pipe were told in February that they will not be getting new deals, while Ian McLoughlin, Kevin Feely and Tom Naylor are all expected to return to their parent clubs in May.
And the likes of Lenny Pidgeley, Ryan Jackson, Harry Worley, Ismail Yakubu, Byron Anthony, Andy Sandell, Darcy Blake, Max Porter, Lee Minshull, Ryan Burge, Danny Crow, Chris Zebroski and Aaron Holloway are all out of contract this summer.
Some of those players have clauses in their current deals that would trigger a new contract and some are in talks about staying at Rodney Parade.
But as things stand only Jamie Stephens, Andrew Hughes, Robbie Willmott, Adam Chapman, Christian Jolley, Aaron O’Connor, Shaun Jeffers and Rene Howe are under contract for next season.
“We’ve got seven games left and I’m looking at them each individually,” said Edinburgh.
“We want to get on a bit of a run and make sure we don’t finish the season on a low. That’s very important.
“A top ten or top 12 finish would be a fantastic achievement for our first season back in the Football League.
“And people will be trying to earn contracts for next season as well so there’s a lot to look at.
“Players’ contracts are up and they’ve got to work hard to earn a living as a Football League player.
“There are still players I am undecided on. As a manager I see things, off the field, training every day and there is a lot to take into consideration.”
Edinburgh also revealed that he is already scouting potential new signings for the 2014/15 campaign.
“We’ve been busy this week where we’ve had a free week,” said the Exiles boss.
“Myself and the coaching staff have taken in a lot of games and we’re active.
“We’ve touched base with a few different agents about players we’d be very keen to bring to this football club next year.
“We won’t name names yet but certainly the wheels are in motion and we want to improve the squad for next season.”
