Flynn will stay at County

South Wales Argus: Mike Flynn thanks the fans (5916257) Mike Flynn thanks the fans (5916257)

NEWPORT County are offering new deals to the bulk of their squad, including midfielder Mike Flynn, the Argus can reveal.

Only defenders Harry Worley and David Pipe, midfielder Ryan Burge and striker Aaron Holloway have been released by the Exiles as manager Justin Edinburgh sets about fine-tuning his squad.

However, although County fans will be jubilant at boss Edinburgh performing a U-turn on Flynn, question marks remain on another hometown hero, defender Byron Anthony.

Anthony had further surgery on his leg injury - having sustained a double fracture back in August in the Capital One Cup win at Premier League chasing Brighton - last Wednesday, and will meet with Justin Edinburgh this week. Any decision on his future is likely to involve consultation with Newport physio Adam Roche, though it is understood there is goodwill on all sides to finding an agreement.

County also list Wales international Darcy Blake and Mike Flynn as ‘in negotiations,’ in their embargoed briefing to the media, though the Argus understands both players will definitely be offered new terms.

Blake’s future is very much in his own hands as he lays out his criteria to County and ponders other offers and it is understood discussions with Flynn will centre not on the issue of staying or leaving, but what role he’ll assume, with the possibility of a dual player/coach role. The Argus has had it confirmed by a couple of sources that Flynn will indeed be an Exile next season.

However, County have also officially agreed that a slew of players will be staying next term.

Deals are now in place for Ryan Jackson and Jamie Stephens, who join Andrew Hughes, Adam Chapman, Aaron O’Connor, Robbie Willmott, Shaun Jeffers, Christian Jolley, Rene Howe and Joe Parker in being confirmed for Rodney Parade next term.

County have also offered deals to goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley, defenders Ismail Yakubu and Andy Sandell, midfielder Lee Minshull and strikers Chris Zebroski and Danny Crow.

Defender/coach Tony James won’t be offered a renewal of his current agreement, but has been retained by the club as strength and conditioning coach.

The news that Flynn is staying at the club will come as a huge relief to supporters.

Boss Edinburgh previously revealed both Flynn and Pipe would be leaving the club, but a series of excellent performances and Flynn’s “brilliant attitude,” according to Edinburgh, prompted a rethink.

It was abundantly clear in County’s 2-1 win over Rochdale on Saturday that Flynn is still a key performer for Newport and the fan response to him has seemingly proved impossible for Edinburgh to ignore.

The releases of Burge and Worley won’t come as any surprise as both have been peripheral figures in 2014.

Worley has figured only twice since February and Burge, a regular around the turn of the year, simply hasn’t established himself at the Exiles.

He’s had an uneasy relationship with Edinburgh and hasn’t played for a month despite being fit, though some of that time he was absent on compassionate leave.

Edinburgh has stated he is targeting six or seven summer signings to round out his squad for the 2014/15 season.

Retained players: Andrew Hughes, Adam Chapman, Aaron O'Connor, Robbie Wilmott, Shaun Jeffers, Ryan Jackson, Christian Jolley, Jamie Stephens, Joe Parker and Rene Howe.

Offered contracts: Lenny Pidgeley, Max Porter, Ismail Yakubu, Lee Minshull, Chris Zebroski, Andy Sandell, Danny Crow.

Released: David Pipe, Ryan Burge, Harry Worley.

Returned to parent clubs: Tom Naylor, Kevin Feely, Ian McLoughlin.

In talks: Mike Flynn, Byron Anthony, Darcy Blake.

Think all 3 were already contracted for 2014/15 season. None of them are up to it anyway so that's a hindrance stopping 3 potential new signings.
Think it nuts getting rid of Ryan Burge think its another player not getting a fair crack off JE.
Big signings required as this current squad we have will not get us anywhere next season.

The difference between our bad patch and improved results at the end was Blake and feeley - without two defenders of similar standard we will be in trouble next season. Chapman is not the quality player people say he is, he continually plays loose passes that very often leads to the opposition being on the front foot - we need someone with more quality in midfield. We also need a wide player with lots of pace - someone like Azeez who like Feeley is another Charlton player.
I am not sure what the real story is about who JE has to keep and who he wants to keep but I think he knows what we need.

This retained list suggests that we are not looking for promotion but more like mid table obscurity. A dangerous strategy where it is a fine dividing line between that and relegation. JE has shown a lack of ambition and his continuing strong favouritism for a few.

Should have got rid of JE when we had the excuse. We didn't and it's going to bite us in the backside next year as he is clearly not capable of selecting a good side. Why Pipe is being released is beyond me he always played with heart and thats the quality that we need. A player that plays with heart is always worth 2 playing for a pay check in my book.

The above comment states lets wait before we judge JE I think that this has been the problem during the bad performances everyone has buried their heads in the sand and hoped for the best. Look at Portsmouth, they got rid of manager, then went on to win 17 points from 7 games with the same players. JE criticised this decision, then out of the 7 games we played he managed 9. Its obvious to me that his man management is the problem and doesn't know how to get the best out of the players.

I am hoping however that he'll give it all next season as he's now got no options of moving to another club so needs to give county everything. As probably upuntil just after christmas I would not have been suprised if there were other clubs taking interest.

Lets hope for a better season next year.

Tend to agree with you there, seems like it was another dressing room disagreement with Ryan Burge about leave that tipped this one, also thought from what JE was saying he was going to have a good clear out but he has not and there is still some dead wood in there, still time will tell.

Difficult for the manager just to go out and buy a squad of new players. The game is awash with players of about the same standard and once they have been on the merry-go-round of being signed and released by several clubs you have to question both their real ability and work ethic. A good manager is one who has a very positive attitude as to the type of football he wants to play and will bring in the players who can both do the job and have the right attitude. My problem with J.E. is that his style of play isn't always positive and I'm not sure he has the real man management skills to motivate the players when things are not going so well. It's more than just talking a good game. However I do believe he's at least competent and hard working and I'm happy to give him another season in charge to show us what's been ascertained from, what in fairness, has been a steep learning curve. Here's to next season.

I honestly wish I had not renewed my season ticket. Much bigger clear out was needed and at least half a dozen players being retained are not up to it. In addition, Worley was an ever present in our great early season run and was good enough to be retained, but he obviously fell out with the manager. Burge too was good enough to be retained. Another to fall out with the boss?Unless Edinburgh comes up with half a dozen really good signings I'm afraid we'll be going nowhere again next season.

No we beat a team that had nothing to play for, and who have recently lost to Torquay and Mansfield away. Their results away suggest that they do not take the lower league teams seriously and come unstuck. The form of the last 5 games Newport have a better form anyhow.

I can't belive that people are still blaming the pitch when other teams have managed to score on it. I'm fed up of people that think the sun shines out of JE backside. He might have been a good Confeance manager, but he's proven that when things get tough in League 2 he's got no plan B. I'm fed up of all the talk and no action from him. Putting far too much pressure on the players with the things that have been published about what he says and taking no responsability for the drop in form.

So anyone that doesn't think that JE is a god and actually has valid opinions is a troll?

Explain what they had to play for then?????

If chesterfield had won then they'd have had no hope in wining the title, of which chesterfield were playing a team that were obviously not going to filed a full team and rest players for the play off. They were playing away from home, and haven't got the best away record going. The only way that they were going to win was if chesterfield had any other result than a win, as they'd have not even done it on points difference.

All my money was on Newport to win and they did. So if I didn't have a scooby then I'd have pilled it all on Rochdale like most people did as the value of the bets dropped off for Rochdale. I've never betted on a Newport match all season but felt like they'd have won that one. Newport tend to play better against the better teams.

So based on statistics and the mental frame of mind of Rochdale players how exactly would the result have been any different.

When your team has escaped the drop only because they had sufficient points in hand from the first half of the season, you want to see hope of an improvement, Adrian. By keeping most of the players responsible for our bad second half run, hope cannot be strong of a better 2014-2015. Obviously, I hope I'm wrong, but you have to be one-eyed to think Crow, Jeffers, Howe and Stephens are worth retaining and Worley and Burge are not.

You really are a muppet! Who cares about the last result of the season. Rochdale were desperate for the win, all newport had to do was frustrate them. it's the results inbetween that symbolises a season. From Jan - April the results were poor and as far as I'm concerned keeping the manager and the poor performing players that he's intent on keeping is only going to echo the last season in the next. Those like yourself are the reason that we are not going to get anywhere next year as nobody has the gutts to make the change required. We just hope that next season is going to be better, I say cut out the dead wood and build a new team as much as we can.

Why is nobody holding the manager accountable, as he's the one that picks the players and gave them contracts in the begining. Oh I know why because if you do your called a troll!!!!!!!!!!
I think its time to get behind the manager and the team.Just look where we were before Justin took over, nearly going out of the conference.Yes he's made mistakes and I'm sure he'll be the first to admit it.I for one will be looking forward to the new season.

All this talk about where we were before JE took over, so we should get behind him, is completely irrelevant. You have to look forward, not back. I still think JE is a very good manager but that doesn't mean his retained list is correct. You always have to look to improve and not rest on your laurels or else you'll be back in the mire before you know it.

There are too many players at the club if the crocks are all fit. I also expected more to leave than this article suggests and I am concerned that another relegation fight will happen next year. We all know that several of the players likely to be retained are not good enough for the Football League. I still have nightmares about the totally inept performance I witnessed at Morecambe. I was utterly shocked by how abysmal our team was and am surprised that 8 of the 9 contracted players (i.e. not loan signings) who started that match are to be retained. I felt like sacking the lot of them.

You really are an idiot, still calling people trolls who don't think JE is beyond criticism
As I said before you act like an 8 year old perhaps I was to polite more like a 5 year old.
Seriously thinking of reporting your comments to the Argus especially the stop breathing comment.
Any more idiotic comment and I certainly will do just that. Got it?

Couldn't have put it better myself. Although I do think that people need to look up the term troll in the dictionary first.

must admit i thought a few more players would have been released to get some fresh blood in .

what still alarms me is p25 w4 d9 lost 12. , an alarming collapse in the second half of the season.

what gives me hope is the form of mike flynn who showed he wanted to be a county man with some blidning performances. aaron o connors goal , a poacher when we needed one. hopefully the pitch sorted out for next season. hopefully retaining the services of darcy blake. and the post season element of asking who will justin bring in! almost forgot the pre seaosn friendly against carl zeiss yena.

plenty to be optimisitic enough and whats the odds on DANNY CROWE being top scorere next season ! worh a punt
