NEWPORT’S Christian Malcolm has been backed to finish his career with another Commonwealth Games medal this summer.

Fellow Welsh athletics legend Colin Jackson, who won two golds and two silvers at the Commonwealths, says Malcolm shouldn’t be written off because of his age.

Malcolm turns 35 on June 3 and missed had to pull out of an event in Loughborough at the weekend with an on-going Achilles problem.

But Jackson is convinced that his former teammate can surprise a few people in the 200m in Glasgow and repeat his bronze medal-winning performance from Delhi in 2010.

“Never say never with Christian; if he overcomes his injury problems he could be in the mix for a medal,” said Jackson, who is promoting the Go Dad Run in Cardiff on June 14.

“The Commonwealths will be his focus for the entire summer, whereas his rivals may be looking at the Europeans and that could split their mindset and give Christian an advantage in Glasgow.

“It would be a nice way for him to bow out after being at the top of the sport for so long.

“I can tell you from personal experience that it takes a lot of effort and motivation to keep your body going when you get to his age,” he added.

“He will have approached this season and thought to himself ‘I’ve got to put my body through one more winter of training.’ “But the motivation of another home event is big for him and all of the British athletes.

“Christian has had a brilliant career and he’s one of the old stagers now so I know he plays an important role in helping the younger athletes through.

“I would say he’s got to be in consideration to be team captain and that would be a fitting tribute to him.”

The Go Dad Run is a brand new 5km event for men, created by Jackson, to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK during Father’s Day Weekend in June.

The event is open to any man or boy aged over 14 who would like to sign up, get sponsored and run, jog or walk around one of three special courses in Cardiff, London or Birmingham.

The Cardiff run is on Saturday, June 14 when you can join Jackson and fellow Olympian Jamie Baulch in Bute Park at 10.30am.

Adult participants will be sent a pair of bright yellow Y-fronts to wear on the day and all runners will get a medal when they finish.

Entry fees are £10 for 14-17 year olds and £15 for men aged 18 and over and all details can be found at www.godadrun.co.uk.

Another Newport sprinter hoping to be in Glasgow is Mica Moore and the 21-year-old recorded another personal best in the 100m at Loughborough.

The Cardiff Met student broke her previous best of 11.80 seconds to run 11.70 and she was also part of the Welsh relay squad.

Moore, Hannah Brier, Hannah Thomas and Rachel Johncock finished second with a time of 45.17 seconds.
