BLACKWOOD'S teen sensation Lauren Williams led the charge of the gold brigade as GB Taekwondo stars excelled on the opening day of the German Open in Hamburg.

Welsh wonder Williams was an impressive winner of the -67kg division, while teammates Max Cater (-58kg) and Peter Radford (-68kg) also won titles.

Wiganer Rachelle Booth weighed in with silver at -62kg to put the pressure on the five remaining members of the squad, including world champion Bianca Walkden, who competes on Sunday.

Williams, the reigning senior European and junior world champion, racked up a staggering 112 points in just four fights, including a 26-5 final win over Spain’s Cecilia Burgos.

The Gwent youngster’s closest match came in the semi-final but she still ran out a 30-16 winner against Sweden’s double Olympian Elin Johansson.

Radford ended his 2015 campaign by winning the French Open in Paris last November.

Now he’s added a German crown to his collection, beating Turkey’s Berkay Akyol, the reigning World University champion, 15-5 in the gold medal match.

Radford’s four other victories included an 8-5 semi-final triumph over Bulgarian Vladimir Dalakliev.

Meanwhile, Cater suffered a succession of near misses in 2016, winning four Open bronze medals and finishing runner-up at the French Open.

This time the 19-year-old London-born prospect made no mistake.

After four wins against opponents from Holland, Germany, Poland and Italy, Cater struck gold with an 18-8 win over Greece’s Eleftherios Fakinos.

World Championship runner-up Booth dropped only six points in reaching her final but met her match in Turkey’s Irem Yaman, with the world and European champion winning 9-1.

Yorkshire’s Bradly Sinden, the 2016 French Open runner-up, reached the quarter-finals of the -68kg event, losing 12-11 against Dalakliev.
