HOOPER Bernice (nee Wilmot) On May 14th, Bernice, aged 98 years, passed peacefully at Mill Heath Nursing Home. Formerly of Devon Place, Newport. Bernice was a noted ex swimming coach and manager of swim teams representing Wales internationally, including Commonwealth Games in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada and was both a Life Member of Swim Wales and President of the City of Newport Swimming and Water Polo Club, having spent many years devoting time to both since her involvement in the former Newport Swimming Club (now merged with the City of Newport Swimming and Water Polo club). She remained active in the Newport swimming community, competing and continuing to set records well into her 80s. She was the beloved wife of the late Wilfred, mother of the late Jocelyn, mother in law of Philip, grandmother of Kevyn and Andrew and great grandmother of Zen. A funeral service will be held Wednesday May 31st, at St Mark's Church, Gold Tops, Newport at 2.30pm followed by interment at St Woolos Cemetery. Family flowers only please, donations if desired payable to Swim Wales / Nofio Cymru may be sent c/o Tovey Bros, 9/11 Cardiff Road, Newport, NP20 2EH.
