Honest Student Gains Kudos But Loses Cash

An honest student from Muswell Hill handed back a grant cheque sent by Haringey Council in error.

Zoology student Jennifer Fulford, 19, was sent a cheque for nearly £700 even though she had already informed the council she was not entitled to it.

She was urged by her friends at Reading University to take the money and keep quiet - but trustworthy Jenny decided to send it back.

Last month she received a letter from the council telling her she had been awarded a full maintenance grant of around £1,800 a year although she was only entitled to claim her tuition fees.

Despite informing the council of its error, Jenny still received the first instalment of £672.62.

She said: "I didn't think twice about giving it back. It's not mine and it should go to someone who needs it."

Her father John Fulford contacted Liberal Democrat councillor Lynne Featherstone, concerned that other cheques were being sent out.

In his letter to Cllr Featherstone, Mr Fulford said: "I am appalled that through sheer incompetence sums of money as large as this are being wasted by Haringey Council."

Cllr Featherstone demanded an urgent investigation.

She said: "I share Mr Fulford's concern that this may be just the tip of the iceberg.
