  • Raise the limit to 80mph

    ONCE again, the possibility of raising the motorway speed limit to 80mph is being mentioned (Argus, May 25), almost guaranteed to bring on a fit of the vapours to the ‘save the polar bears’ brigade. Yet, it has been frequently reported that India and China between them, pump more pollution into the atmosphere in a day than Great Britain does in six months. A statistic that the environmental lobby (in this country at least) for some strange reason are not always happy when they are reminded of it. read more

  • Sponsorship was fairly won

    SO Nigel Collins thinks that someone should be “hung, drawn and quartered” for allowing a German Motor company to head the Olympic Torch parade. read more

  • Rot started in United States

    The police force are having to make swingeing cuts, not of their making. Further yet, but yet again our local health body is required to cut yet another £48m. read more

  • Olympics are about money

    WHY castigate people for wanting to make a fast buck by selling their Olympic torches? (Argus letters, May 29). They are merely pursuing the modern Olympic dream - hard cash. This “amateur” event is now devoted to attracting huge sums of money, from the bribery and corruption at the highest levels to the moneygrubbing of the athletes. read more

    MAY I respond to Mr Dix’s appalling outburst calling for the culling of Blackwood town councillors in his letter of May 28. read more

  • We promise to help our town

    I WOULD like to take this opportunity to congratulate members of the Blaenavon Labour team who succeeded in winning election to Torfaen council, and Blaenavon Town Council. I and the Blaenavon Labour Party are humbled that the townspeople granted us a hearing at the doorstep, and backed Labour candidates at the ballot box. Many voters I spoke to shared our belief that during difficult times, Blaenavon’s representatives need to organise around a strong set of core values, and work in partnership with members from the wider Torfaen community. read more
