The Bishop of Monmouth, Rt Revd Dominic Walker OGS, licensed Linda Batt as a lay reader in a service in Newport Cathedral last week.

Mother-of-one Ms Batt, from Maesglas, is a teaching assistant in the reception class of a Newport primary school.

Until recently, she worked with children with challenging behaviour and learning difficulties.

For her new role in the church, she trained at St Michael’s College, Llandaff, where she studied once a week alongside full-time students, deepening her knowledge of the Christian faith, church history and the bible.

She has been an active church member in the parish of Maesglas and Duffryn.

She now joins the benefice of Magor where she can lead public worship and assist the clergy in preaching and teaching Christian faith.

She said: "I am really looking forward to being part of the ministry team in the Magor Benefice but will be sad to say goodbye to the people of Duffryn and Maesglas."
