Coronation picture plea
My brother was on a carnival float for the Queen’s Coronation. He was five at the time and dressed as a chimney sweep. read more

Tories have no conscience
The PM showed his true colours with his condemnation of Jimmy Carr for cheating the taxman, while saying nothing about Lord Ashcroft, David Rowland, Phillip Hammond, Philip Green, Viscount Astor, George Osborne, Jeremy Hunt, Andrew Mitchell and others who rob the country of millions. read more

New council spending freely
NICE that Mr Boyd is back, this time requesting a change to the head of state. Can you imagine it, another Mr Blair dragging us into another futile war just because the big shot in the States thinks it is best for peace and democracy; or the head of state and the Prime Minister disagreeing with each other in public, that will be good for our international image. read more

No recession for some folk
Every day, as we read newspapers and listen to news bulletins, we have this feeling of a huge black cloud hovering over us. read more

Where is Bevan or George now?
Last Thursday, I went to the Heath hospital, Cardiff, with my wife, who is disabled. We came out of the lift and there was a huge painting of Aneurin Bevan, the founder of our health service. It got me thinking about where the new Nye Bevan is, or the new Lloyd George or the new Winston Churchill. Where is the new Clement Atlee? read more

Time to make a fresh start
Desiderata, I think it was called. A framed text which I first saw 40 years ago. It made a tremendous impression on me and, if memory serves, went something like: ‘God give me the grace to accept things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to recognise the difference.’ I agree that some British monarchs had abysmal histories. A friend in Usk has a pub called the King’s Head and like all King’s Head pubs, it was called that because the hated Scots-English king was executed by beheading. What happened to Edward IV was demonic and inhuman. read more

Church of God is in people
With reference to Mr R John Smith, who writes in regard to traditional churches with financial problems, and to his comments about the Americanised showbiz of modern, large churches like Victory Church in Cwmbran, may I add one or two choice observations? read more

Fly dragon and ignore London
THURSDAY morning, June 21. Watching breakfast TV and wondering why the devil the Olympics is being referred to as the London 2012 Festival, when an old buddy, Ian McMillan, celebrity poet and announcer, is given the opportunity to comment on it and does so in his typically blunt Yorkshire manner. read more

Ethical poser for council
Letters 25th Get on with fixing country HOW much longer must Argus readers suffer from the daily nonsense written by Councillor Nigel Dix? If he is fulfilling his role properly as a councillor, how does he have so much time? His time would be better spent helping those who elected him, to make their area better and a safer place to live. read more

Dog owners need to act
I WAS very sorry to hear about Simon North’s dog, Fozzy, being attacked by an ‘off the lead’ dog (Argus, June 20). read more

Flagging up a thorny issue
REFERENCE D R Hall’s comments on the Royal Standard (Letters, June 21), I believe he is correct, surely one quarter could go to Wales. Or should that be half if Scotland leaves the union? read more

Why not put ship in bottle
HOW reassuring to see the return of the Newport ship to your centre pages last Tuesday. Its origins and prospects still in doubt, this waterlogged wonder of the Usk continues to haunt the thoughts of ... well, those who think about that sort of thing. read more

Web Bill a huge worry
FOR those who use the internet, whether it be for research, entertainment or just communicating with friends, the Government’s Communications Data Bill 2012, announced in the Queen’s Speech has implications for us all. read more
