Domestic abuse help centre opens in Cwmbran
A DROP-IN centre for people suffering from domestic abuse officially opened in Cwmbran.
Equalities Minister Jane Hutt officially opened the Chrysalis Centre, where people suffering from domestic abuse can get information and support in a safe environment, on Thursday.
Ms Hutt explained that the Welsh Government has provided funding of nearly £300,000 over the last four years for these centres, which provide support to both men and women suffering from domestic abuse.
She added: "I am confident that this will enhance the services being provided to the families and victims in the area and would like to congratulate all those organisations who have come together to collaborate and deliver this joint venture."
One woman who used the service as she suffered emotional abuse from her husband said: "He did not want me going out and was controlling. We had two children so I had to get out of there.
"They advise you and it gives you confidence to get out. They help you apply for benefits and are like friends as they are there for you all the time."
Another woman gained help to be rehoused allowing her to get away from her partner who was an abusive drunk.
She said: "My child is in temporary foster care but I will get my child back thanks to being rehoused.
"I stayed in my situation as I didn't know places like this existed, so having one here will benefit local women."
The centres are a partnership between Torfaen Women's Aid, Hafan Cymru, Victim Support and the Community Safety Partnership.
