Runners pound the roads

ON June 15 the Fairwater Runners took part in a Relay Run which started in Grosmont at 7.30am. The run was in thirteen stages, with eleven teams taking part. Secretary Julie Roache said it was a very friendly occasion, a fun event, although it was run professionally, with proper time keeping and with the police informed and the St. John's ambulance in attendance.

Scanning sheep

During the Christmas break, when the house was overflowing with family, we were invited to go and watch the sheep being scanned at Home Farm, Hilston. Four of us went. The sheep were gathered in a large barn with pens leading into a sheep race. A gate at one end of the race kept the sheep back and they were allowed through one or two at a time. A gate at the other end of the race kept the sheep out of the scanning area. Farmer Vernon Pugh was in charge of this gate and he let through one ewe at a time into the scanning area next to the scanner. The operator of the scanning machine very kindly paused from time to time to point out on the screen the lamb or lambs in the womb. Then Vernon marked each ewe according to whether it was carrying a single lamb, twins or even triplets. Although we used to keep sheep, we never had enough to warrant scanning. The flock at Home Farm is much bigger than ours was and scanning the ewes enables them to be grouped and fed accordingly. It was an interesting experience to watch the scanning. Thanks to the Pugh family for inviting us to watch the scanning - and may they have lots of twins!
