The Old Barn, near Llanmartin, is one of a number of local businesses which have endured the downturn and are beginning to speak with cautious optimism as the business forecasts turnover to increase this year to £1.1m supported by Barclays.

The hotel, pub and restaurant based near the village of Llanmartin has 15 rooms and currently employs 25 staff.

Phil Moore, owner of The Old Barn said: “We try to run the business as one big family with a huge emphasis on quality of both the service and home cooked food. We are not in the market of just putting bums on seats.

"The recession was tough and many businesses like ourselves experienced cashflow pressures, but after speaking to our bank we eased the cashflow pressure and decided with the support of our bank to invest into the creation of a function room 'The Orangery' to accommodate the increased demand for weddings and all other types of events. I’m glad to say that the investment is paying dividends as turnover is up and we already have 40 wedding bookings for 2015.

"Running a business is tough with no rest bite and being tied to the business 24 hours a day but the rewards far outweigh the downsides even after working 18 hour days. The gratitude of customers simply enjoying their lunch or guests of a wedding party giving you a departing hug makes it all worthwhile.”

Jean Jones, Barclays Business support director, said: “As champions of local business, it is essential that we support local businesses such as The Old Barn not just when the going is good but also when things get tough.

"By really understanding the business and issues they have faced, Barclays has been able to support the business both financially and professionally throughout the downturn. The business has emerged from the experience leaner and meaner and learnt valuable lessons which have placed the business on a strong footing for future business prosperity. The investment has doubled the wedding capacity guest numbers and the business holds a certificate of excellence from Trip Advisor to demonstrate the quality of service from independent reviews. Further investment is also planned for this year as the lounge and bar areas undertake a full refurbishment.”

Jackie Moore, co-owner of The Old Barn, said: “We are very optimistic about the future and we want to build on our existing reputation. We are very much aware of the challenges within the industry, but believe if you have the right staff and the right product you have a good chance of success. Whatever the external economic environment throws up, there will always be some businesses doing well and others not so well. We have weathered the downturn and can use the investment supported by Barclays to grow and strengthen our business. We offer a great location, great food and great service and suggest that everyone should come and visit one of Gwent’s best kept secrets.”
