Two Newport City Council cabinet members found out more about a thriving manufacturing company’s exciting projects during a tour of its Newport-based UK hub.

Councillor John Richards, whose portfolio covers regeneration and development, and Councillor Deb Davies, who has responsibility for skills and work, were shown around AIC Steel near the Transporter Bridge.

Established in March 2014, it is the UK arm of the global AIC Steel Group which is committed to delivering world class structural steelwork to the construction industry.

It has £8m of contracts on its order books, including installing steelwork for the redevelopment of Bristol City’s Ashton Gate Stadium and a residential development in London’s Mayfair.

Based in Neptune Works, once the home of Rowecord, the business has taken on many ex-Rowecord workers and recently recruited its 100th employee.

Cllr Richards said: “It was fantastic to see that AIC Steel has done so incredibly well in under a year and is producing such high quality work in Newport.

“It proves that a manufacturing industry is still alive and well in Newport and I’m sure AIC Steel will continue to be a real success story. We would both like to thank the company and its representatives for such an informative visit and it will continue to be one of the city’s success stories.”

Cllr Davies said: “Firms such as AIC Steel are providing vital employment opportunities in our city and it is pleasing that they are able to find the skilled workers that they need locally, particularly from among the former Rowecord workforce.

“I was pleased to hear that the company wants to work with our schools to promote apprenticeship programmes to ensure they will have a sustainable workforce in the city. I would like to wish AIC Steel all the best for what promises to be a flourishing future here in Newport.”
