Newport-based manufacturer Asset International has strengthened its engineering team with the promotion of product manager Dr Vasilios Samaras to the position of technical director.

The promotion follows a period of growth for the firm, which manufactures Weholite large diameter pipes for the water management and construction industries, and whose international reputation has been rising steadily over the last few years.

Dr Vasilios Samaras, 35, joined Asset International in 2005 and has established himself as a world-renowned authority on large diameter plastic pipes.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Mechanical Engineers and a Member of the European Engineering Institution. He holds a BEng and a CEng in Mechanical Engineering, a Masters Degree in Research in Computer Modelling and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, all from Swansea University. He is also currently studying for an MBA at Swansea Metropolitan University.

Dr Samaras oversees an engineering team which designs integrated pipework systems and solutions for the construction industry.

He is currently working on a multi-million pound project to help improve London’s antiquated Victorian sewage networks, as well as overseeing a number of other high profile projects both in the UK and abroad.

The promotion and a number of other recent appointments follows a strong period for the firm as the construction industry continues to re-energise itself following the economic downturn, with the housing sector being a particular focus of activity for the firm, who have strong links with property developers across the UK.

Dr Samaras said: “Much of the work we do here is truly cutting edge in the sphere of mechanical engineering. For decades the mind-set within the construction industry has meant that traditional materials are always the preferred choice however, now people are beginning to understand the benefits of working with plastic, and the enhanced performance and economic value that it brings to projects. Something that is clearly demonstrated by vast new infrastructure projects within the construction industry around the UK.

“My new role as technical director allows me to further develop my knowledge and experience via our work with many of the country’s largest construction firms and water companies.”

Managing director of Asset International Simon Thomas said: “This is a just reward for Vasilios’ continued hard work, dedication and admirable achievements. Over the past ten years Vasilios has not only become an integral part of our machine, but via his continued commitment to his academic pursuits in the fields of mechanical engineering and plastics, he has become an authority on the world stage.”
