Caldicot-based sport and leisure industry training provider ICON Training celebrated 20 years this month with a gala event at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, for its 100-strong workforce and a host of learners, past and present.

Founder and industry veteran Julian Leybourne laid out his plans for the next 20 years to staff, learners, partners and supporters of the independent organisation, before an awards ceremony that recognised and rewarded learners for their commitment and achievements.

Julian Leybourne, CEO ICON Training, said: “I have seen this industry shift and change significantly over the past 20 years, but believe the biggest changes are yet to come. We launched our new vision for the sport and leisure industry sector earlier this year, which is about raising the bar significantly and means for the first time learners will be able to progress from Level 1 courses (Aspiring Professional) through to Masters Level 7 qualifications (Director) across a range of sector disciplines, with one Ofsted Grade 1 company.

“I believe we’ve survived this long and continue to thrive because we don’t ever stand still and after 20 years continue to help people genuinely change their lives. Our award winners tell the story much better than me however.”

The evening sponsored by Active IQ, one of the UK’s leading awarding organisations for the active leisure, learning and wellbeing sector.

Gary Denton, director ICON Training, said: “Our learners are evidence that with a little support and guidance the opportunities in this sector can be endless and can also be long-term. For too long many jobs in our industry has been viewed as something temporary or short-term. We’re working hard to change that, and our inspirational learners are evidence of what can be achieved.

“Through the on-going development of our training and the move into more senior qualifications we will also be testing the water with wider industry Leadership and Management courses, outside of the sport and leisure industry."
