Former Chancellor George Osbourne caused a bit of a storm when it was announced he was taking up the role as editor of The Standard newspaper in London, on top of a number of other positions including that of MP.

Business Argus asked the local business community what role they would like if they were able to take up a new jobs alongside the one they were currently doing...

Gemma Carter, community/events fundraiser (Monmouthshire/Newport), St David's Hospice Care

I love dancing and all forms of performing arts. I taught dancing, singing and drama for years at many local performing arts schools and always found it so much fun and very rewarding. If I had the time I would definitely like to teach again. Maybe one day!

David Lewis, employment law solicitor, Howells Solicitors

My next door neighbours are professional dog walkers, every morning as I stroll to the office, I pass them with a new pack of hounds of various sizes and shapes. On occasions, I’ve seen them with an Irish Wolf Hound on one lead and a Yorkshire Terrier on the other! On sunny days especially, I often have the irresistible urge to follow them rather than continue my way to the office. While I do love my job (which on times feels like more than one anyway!) I do like the thought of working outside with man’s best friend. Reasonably long work hours mean I can’t have a dog of my own so this would be the best of both worlds. One downside; that Irish Wolf Hound did look like it was walking them!

Having an office based job definitely means I miss out on some fresh air and sunshine so, something which comes with both, or at least in Wales, the former would be great.

Erin Davies, M4 Property Consultants, Newport

I currently undertake administrative and social media marketing responsibilities for M4 Property Consultants, as well as helping with the property management and lettings elements of the business. I enjoy my job and learning more about commercial property, but if I were to have a second job, I did see that ‘ILoveGin’, a monthly British gin and tonic club, were hiring a ‘gintern’ to travel around the world and drink gin. Two days per week, travelling to distilleries around the UK and Europe, drinking gins and tonics, blogging about it and getting paid £20,000 per annum sounds pretty idyllic to me!

Cerys Roberts, sales manager, Kingston Newell Estate Agents, Newport

If I could combine my current role with another one, it would still involve houses but property development. Every day, I visit homes with massive potential opportunities and would love to have the time (and money) to start building up my own portfolio. Being able to see the ‘bigger picture’ and highlighting these to potential buyers is essential in my industry and I would love to be in a position to act on my own advice!

Leanne Fieldhouse, practice manager, Budget Vets, Newport

I would love to spend part of my year working with wild animals in far off countries. When I watch programmes on TV featuring animal orphanages in South America and Africa I wish I was there helping out. It’s not a practical dream job but it is certainly one that I would love to have a go at.
