David Davies, the MP for Monmouth, is set to be the speaker at the May City of Newport Business Club event.

Mr Davies, a Conservative who has been an MP since 2005, will be speaking to club members and guests in his capacity as chairman of the Welsh Affairs select committee.

Mr Davies was educated at Bassaleg School, Newport and served for nine years as a special constable with the British Transport Police.

He is also a keen sportsman who has fought in several charity boxing matches as 'The Tory Tornado' and is a former president of the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association.

His political career has also seen him serving as an AM after winning a seat at the inaugural 1999 Welsh Assembly Election.

The business club event is being held at the golf club at the Celtic Manor Resort on May 24 starting at 5.30pm.

The event, which includes a two-course meal, costs £30.

Chairman of the club Janet Harris, who has been involved with the club since it was relaunched in 2004, has stepped down due to ill health and treasurer Chris England has taken over duties until a new chairman is appointed.
