By Gerald Davies of Kymin Financial Services

It doesn’t stand for Gerald Davies, Public Relations. As you probably know, it stands for General Data Protection Regulations. So much, so boring.

If you have a business and an email account, you will have been contacted by countless organisations wanting to 'help' you prepare for GDPR.

Many of these are in the category of 'Ambulance Chasers'. Their 'raison d’etre' (if you’ll pardon a French remark – well, the idea did come from Europe) is to frighten you into parting with your money.

I have lost count of the number of organisations who have offered to help us 'get ready for GDPR'. It must total more than 100 in the last month. All kinds of terrible things will befall you if you do not use their services to prepare for the big change.

Many of the emails I have received in the last three months have been from organisations that I have no recall of ever having heard of. They all want me to confirm that I still want to hear from them. If I simply delete them, hopefully I’ll never hear from them again.

It won’t surprise anyone that we have been preparing for GDPR for some months now, as there has been plenty of notice.

Now for the good news. If you don’t rise to the bait, there is a chance that the huge volume of emails that pollutes your inbox, may diminish. Of course, we have all the usual spam filters but the avalanche of, mostly, garbage has continued.

As the new regulations came into effect on May, I am holding my breath in the hope that the number of messages may diminish. If this happens, then GDPR will have been useful.
