Newport-based Reseiclo has been shortlisted for a Social Business Wales award.

The social enterprises competing for the top spots at this year’s Social Business Wales Awards have been announced, with Newport-based Reseiclo Community Wood Recycling being shortlisted for the environmental category.

The awards night, being held in September, will recognise excellence within the social business sector in Wales. Entrants come from a range of social businesses but all demonstrate a dynamic, entrepreneurial and ambitious attitude that are driving the sector forward.

Reseiclo Community Wood Recycling was set up in 2007 to rescue waste wood from being sent to landfill. The wood collected is either re-sold, made into wooden products to sell in the Reseiclo shop or made into chipboard. They also provide volunteering and employment opportunities for those furthest from the job market including placements for charities which support people with learning difficulties.

Trefor Puw, director at Reseiclo, said: "We are excited to be nominated for this award. We have proved the sustainability of the concept by being still here after 10 years - during which time we have collected, and recycled or reused nearly 6,000 tonnes of 'waste' wood."

Derek Walker, chief executive of the Wales Co-operative Centre, national body for the social business and co-operative sector in Wales, said: “Every year it seems to get more difficult to short list for these awards, the quality of the applications are a testament to all the good work that these businesses are doing.

"We know the social business sector is growing, our research shows that the sector now employs approximately 40,800 people and is worth an estimated £2.37bn to the Welsh economy.

“These businesses are delivering vital services and creating jobs and economic opportunities across Wales. Looking at the applications there are some really inspirational businesses out there with real growth potential.”
