AN Iranian failed asylum seeker who used false documents to obtain employment in Newport has been jailed for 12 months at Newport crown court this afternoon.

Arshad Ahmady, 24, used his brother's passport and forged letters purporting to be from the Home Office.

Ahmady of Buttermere Way, Old Barn Estate, Newport, admitted three charges of possessing identity documents with intent to deceive.

Prosecutor Gareth James said that in January Ahmady applied for a job with Quin Radiators of Newport.

At the time he was a failed asylum seeker with no right to stay in Britain.

He produced a false passport and documents purporting to be from the Home Office.

He also used a bank account of a friend to enable his wages to be paid to him.

The court heard that Ahmady had a previous conviction for entering the UK without leave.

His counsel Hywel Hughes said Ahmady had been frank from the start.

"What he fears more than prison is deportation."

Recorder Helen Misslin said: "You committed serious offences. Those who have a false passport with the intent of using it must realise the sentence has to be custody."

She recommended that on his release Ahmady be deported.
