Crows and Caerleon clash in big derby

WEEKEND ACTION: Mardy's Gary Barrel on the ball against Abertillery Bluebirds in Division One. The Bluebirds won 7-0.

MacWhirter Welsh League football round-up

WHILE every player loves putting one over on his former club, matters won't quite be so straight forward when Caerleon host Division One rivals Cwmbran Town at Cold Bath Road tomorrow.

Such has been the upheaval at Cwmbran - the club is currently using what amounts to its second squad of the season - that Josh Collins, Kristian Hanbury, Matthew Hearne, Wayne Jepson, Chris Pearce and Martyn Phillips will not come up against any former Crow colleague.

Hanbury and Todd Quarterly return to eighth-placed Caerleon's squad after both missed last Saturday's 2-1 win at Dinas Powys because of unavailability while the Crows, ninth and six points adrift of their hosts having played two games more, have no injury worries.

Newport YMCA are Gwent's leading Division One club in seventh position, but they have injury doubts over two strikers - hamstring-victims Lewis Sommers and Aaron Stewart - while a third - Mike Palmer - is on holiday for their away clash against relegation candidates Maesteg Park Athletic.

Caldicot Town are just one point behind Cwmbran in 11th position and they will seek to continue their recent form improvement when they visit rock-bottom outfit Garw - although they'll be minus unavailable central defender Gareth Haywood.

Croesyceiliog are only one position and four points off the drop zone, but will be flat out to clinch a second successive home victory when they entertain the team immediately above them, Pontardawe Town.

Joint manager Chris Evans reports Jodi Jenkins, Mike Dewer and Ross Bristow will all make squad returns, but that Callum Miles and Jamie Jenkins must shake off respective hamstring and ankle strains.

In Division Two, sixth-placed Llanwern face a trip to Troedyrhiw with a big doubt over the availability of leading scorer Steve Perszewski.

Central defender Mike Aviss has been ruled out of the trip although Gareth Wysome, Marcus Power and Steve Stinton should all make it.

Cwmbran Celtic look comfortable enough in eighth position and their only absentee for the home game against Grange Harlequins is central defender Ben Graham, who is still only in light-training mode following knee surgery.

Tredegar Town have climbed to 12th, although they remain only five points off the relegation zone having played more matches than all of their rivals and they'll be unable to call on suspended duo Paul Reed and Ryan Caniff tomorrow.

However a home victory over one-from-the-bottom Llangeinor could see them elevate themselves up three places - depending on other results.

Risca United, Aberbargoed Buds and Goytre are locked in battle to become the county's highest-placed Division Three club - and all have home matches to boost their bids.

Eighth-placed Risca are at full strength and will welcome back hand-injury victim striker Andrew Gay for the visit of bottom side Morriston Town.

The Buds, 10th, have doubts over goalkeeper Asa Kirkwood (back), striker Ross Fowler (head) and central defender Mike Simmons (ankle) for the encounter with relegation-threatened Seven Sisters while Goytre, who are 11th, will be without suspended midfielder Kevin Wallace, but are hopeful of having Darren Haines and striker Martin Houston available again.

Despite being 13th of 18, Monmouth Town are 11 points clear of the three-strong danger zone. However they will be minus the long-term injured Aaron Davies (thigh) and have doubts over Jack Alderdice (knee) and Simon Wookey (foot) for the visit of second-placed Pentwyn Dynamos.

One-from-the-bottom Abertillery Excelsiors have just eight games left to ensure they don't go down, but at least they are at full strength for their trip to face Llansawel, who are 12th.
