Magistrate accused of charity theft

A GWENT magistrate allegedly stole more than £18,000 from the mental health charity where she was formerly treasurer.

Alison Briggs, 49, is accused of ten counts of theft between September 2005 and March 2007.

Briggs of De Braose Close, Ysbyty Fields, Abergavenny, was the volunteer treasurer of the Abergavenny branch of the Alzheimer's Society from 2004 until May 2007.

She appeared before Cardiff magistrates court yesterday where it was alleged she stole £18,300.

No plea was entered and Briggs was granted unconditional bail to appear before Cardiff magistrates on April 23 for the matter to be committed to crown court.

In 1996, she became a Magistrate for South East Gwent Petty Sessional Division.

A spokesman for the Judicial Communications Office confirmed that Briggs was a magistrate in Gwent and that she is currently not sitting.
