Residents of Somerton celebrate the go-ahead for a new community centre

A MUCH needed community centre got the go-ahead yesterday.

The £150,000 building on the grounds of Somerton Primary School will be a base for community organisation Rascal.

The centre houses a multi-use area for recreational, cultural and educational activities, as well as a creche, a modern computer suite and a cafe to provide healthy eating options.

Rascal's mandate is to improve the lives of those living in Somerton and they're involved in a number of local projects including a youth reward scheme for good behaviour and a 'nifty 50' group for older residents.

Rascal community development worker, Bev Weaver, said the community centre was "everything" to the organisation: "It's all about the regeneration of the estate it's so important and we've been fighting for this for years.

"Kids have nothing on the estate to call their own so hopefully this will make a massive difference," she said.

Newport Council say the centre will be a focal point for the area's regeneration and support local community groups, develop employment and training as well as leisure and sporting activities.

Councillor Ray Truman, cabinet member for community safety and sustainability, and ward member for Alway said: "There is no doubt that good quality community facilities such as this play a huge role in bringing communities together and that is something that the council and Rascal are committed to achieving here in Somerton.

"On behalf of my fellow councillors, Ken Powell and John Guy, I would like to say how delighted we are that this much needed project is now up and running. A huge amount of work has taken place behind the scenes to reach this stage."
