Silver screen returns to 'stute
 |
| (L-R) Andrew Farina-Chiilds and Darren Jones welcomed the return of moves to the Blackwood Miners Institute |
THE movies are coming back to Blackwood after a break of more than three years, the Argus can reveal.
Blackwood Miners Institute stopped screening regular weekly blockbusters in December 2004 due to a lack of demand and a loss of business to nearby multi-screen cinemas.
But now the 'stute is set to bring back cinema screenings with a programme to appeal to all ages and interests.
The new initiative will include cinema classics for older people, a film education programme, a programme for children and young people and a community cinema programme.
The 'stute will pay for the screenings out of its annual £158,000 programming budget, and it will hold at least one event a month.
A council spokesman said the plans will help attract even more people to the popular local venue.
Blackwood town councillor Darren Jones had called on Caerphilly council to re-introduce cinema screenings, and said he is "delighted" at the news.
He said: "The 'stute is the jewel in Blackwood's crown and since the nightly cinema ceased, we have lost a vital part of community life.
"In light of so many recent concerns over the town centre, we should make every effort to reclaim it for local people."
He said a one-off showing of Transformers during last year's October half term proved popular with children and showed there was a demand for more screenings.
He said: "Everyone thinks it's a shame the films were stopped. I have spoken to parents and traders who would welcome the cinema back, so I think its wonderful they are doing this."
Local resident and fellow campaigner Andrew Farina-Childs added: "I fully support bringing the movies back to Blackwood, it would be a huge boost to the town and hopefully encourage more local people to reclaim the town centre."

Totally unsuitable for use as a cinema. Try watching a film there when they have a band in the downstairs bar, you won't hear any dialogue. But you will be able to hear the band.

But I've got to agree with Horace while this is a good idea what Blackwood really needs is a cinema/ bowling complex just like Nantgawr and keep the stute for whatever they do there
