NEWPORT is Wales' top kerbside recycler.
Latest figures put the city at the top of the table when it comes to picking up recyclables from people's doorsteps.
On average, more than 200 kilogrammes of material is collected from each household every year.
Around a third of all waste in the city is now recycled.
In 1996, Newport recycled 4,000 tonnes - in 2007, it was 24,000 tonnes.
"Through the participation of residents, Wastesavers has grown from a special interest group to a huge recycling operation," said chief executive Paul Jones.
He added that the partnership was a huge benefit to Newport as the council strived to meet tough recycling targets.
Mr Jones also pointed out that in its 11 years, nearly 137 tonnes of material had been diverted from landfill.
More than half of this figure was achieved since the council decided to move to alternate week collections.
A 40 per cent increase in trade recycling has also been recorded.
Councillor Ray Truman, cabinet member for community safety and sustainability, said: "We are on the right track. We are adapting to new habits and making the schemes work."
He added that recycling protected the environment and "the money in our pockets".

Wonderful figures and yes I do my bit too. Whats the point though? The travellers are blantantly fly tipping continually !!
On Leeway groups of them take it turns to park , earn their cash , tip their rubbish and then clear off . Our council cleans it all behind them ready till the next group arrive to fly tip all over again !!! Is that saving us money .....No !!
