Residents celebrate traffic control cash
RESIDENTS on an Ebbw Vale street are celebrating after being told £70,000 will be spent on traffic calming measures in their road.
The money will come from the Assembly and will be spent on measures including 20 mph signs on Badminton Grove.
Speeding motorists have caused great concern, not least because there are two schools in close proximity.
Around 350 youngsters attend the nearby Glyncoed Primary School while another 800 go to Glyncoed Comprehensive.
Alison Williams, 47, has lived in Badminton Grove for 11 years, she described the funding as a positive move.
Mrs Williams said: "I think it's always good to restrict the speed of travel in built up areas, hopefully it will discourage the youngsters who sometimes fly up the street."
A fellow resident of the street, Paul Prosser, 52, welcomed the funding and said currently, some motorists drive too fast along the road.
He said: "I'm definitely pleased, with lots of children here it's definitely going to be valuable to the children. It's good if it stops accidents and saves lives."
Local Councillor Brian Scully said: "People in the area have fought a campaign for about three years as there is an enormous amount of traffic on this busy road.
"They have been very worried that an accident may happen if nothing is done.
"It is a straight road about 100 metres long and a recipe for speeding."
The speed limit is currently 30mph and as well as reducing that limit, other measures will also be discussed such as installing speed humps.

...believe me it won't... the money would be better spent on mobile speed cameras or extra traffic police to enfore the law....
we had such a scheme done around St Julians Comp...and those who ignore the 30mph limit will ignore the 20mph limit if there's no one around to enforce it.... and speed humps a total waste of time...in fact cause more of a danger as mortorists swerve to straddle the hump...
another alternative...like they did some where else in Wales...give the local resident hi-vis jackets and speed guns...this will have a greater effect on the cretins who don't realise the dangers from speeding....

....furthermore...my solution would be along the lines of the new power police have to seize un-insured/taxed cars.... a driver caught speeding...instead of fine/points...on the first occasion would have their car impounded for a week... the second occasion two weeks and if this didn't deter them from speeding the car would get crushed....we need more zero tolerance for law breakers...not he namby-pamby 'rehabilitation' and in effect non custodial sentances....

I know the rules, as you and the majority of our society do- so why should there be any warnings? I have no time for rehab. even second chances to me are suspect. Please let us get rid of the do-gooders, and put this society back on a firm foundation.

I agree,but with the exception- first offence -obliteration! I know the rules, as you and the majority of our society do- so why should there be any warnings?
