CABINET members in Caerphilly look set to officially object to the proposed closure of a valleys post offices.
A report to Caerphilly's cabinet meeting next week highlights the proposed closure of Pentwynmawr Post Office, Newbridge, and the Post Office's decision to close offices at Argoed, Abercarn, Wyllie, and Wattsville.
And it recommends that cabinet members should write to the Post Office's chief executive to formally object.
Pentwynmawr was added to the closure list after two other went offices were saved.
Christchurch Post Office in Newport and Pentwyn Post Office in Pontypool will remain open.
Newbridge ward councillor Mike Davies responded to the news that Pentwynmawr was now under threat: "We thought our Post Office was safe. I feel like the rug has been pulled from underneath our feet.
"Why should the people of Pentwynmawr suffer for others to gain? It's totally unfair."
A Post Office spokesman explained that the closure of Pentwynmawr is in response to government targets that call for the closure of 2,500 Post Offices across the UK.
Closures have to be proportionately spread within regions and Pentwynmawr faces the axe as the company tries to meet the targets.
Councillor Davies and the residents of Pentwynmawr are to start a petition opposing the closure.
They argue that for many elderly residents, the post office is an essential lifeline, others argue that it is an important part of village life.
A formal six week period of consultation is taking place, and a final decision on the future of the Pentwynmawr branch will take place after June 17.
The cabinet will discuss the Post Office closure report in their meeting on Tuesday.
