YM prepare for more cup glory
YM striker Lewis Sommers is an injury doubt
YM striker Lewis Sommers is an injury doubt

NEWPORT YMCA will travel to Newtown today and book themselves into a hotel for what manager Mark Coldrick describes as their cup final.

The MacWhirter Welsh League Division One amateurs are just two games from Europe as they take on Welsh Premier side Bangor City in the Welsh Cup semi-final tomorrow (kick-off 2.30pm).

Since their fantastic comeback to beat WPL outfit Welshpool 3-2 in the quarter-final at Mendalgief Road on St David's Day, the YM have won three and lost two league games and Coldrick admits the players have found it hard to avoid being distracted by tomorrow's game.

"We lost at Afan Lido three days after the Welshpool game and it was a bit like after the Lord Mayor's Show," he said.

"And at Goytre on Tuesday we shuffled our pack a bit with Bangor in mind. The lads were a bit disappointed but it was easy to pick up their heads with such a massive game on the horizon."

Despite the mixed league form, YM are still in seventh position and Coldrick doesn't blame them for having one eye on the cup.

"It's brilliant for all of us because it's not something any of us have experienced before," he said.

"We're travelling up today and staying in a hotel to make sure we're fully prepared and I can tell you that even I've got a few butterflies in the stomach.

"We're treating it as our cup final and we just hope the adventure continues once again."

Coldrick has injury worries over several players ahead of tomorrow with Alex Stewart definitely out with a serious knee injury picked up at Goytre on Tuesday.

His likely replacement Alex Jenkins is also doubtful with an ankle knock and giant striker Lewis Sommers is struggling after tweaking his hamstring.

"Lewis is obviously a big player for us and we're hopeful he'll be able to play," added Coldrick.

"He's been having some treatment and at the moment it looks like he's got a 70-30 chance of playing."

Whoever plays, Coldrick is confident of a win after watching Bangor lose at Carmarthen last week.

"We watched them and there's nothing for us to fear," he said. "They're a decent side with pace up front but nothing particularly stood out.

"Obviously we're the underdogs and we won't underestimate them but we believe we can get another Premier League scalp."
