Bowls players' anger at green charges

ANNOYED bowls players say green fee rises in Newport have been poorly handled.
Changes mean that a concessions card - which gives a 40 per cent discount on season ticket membership - will be means tested from April 1.
The City Council will charge £71 to bowl on publicly owned bowling grounds for the 2008 season, up from £68.50 the year before.
Pensioners will be entitled to a swimming card which will allow them to bowl for £42.60 - a 40 per cent discount and up from the £34 charged previously.
The changes will affect over 300 bowls players and nine clubs in Newport.
Caerleon Bowling Club secretary Fred Loughman said: "Its been very badly handled - and in my personal opinion its been very confusing.
"We're used to just a couple of pounds increase. This is a lot more than usual."
A council spokesman said the price increases were in line with inflation, and that residents aged over 60 can receive a 40 per cent discount for free.
He said pricing structures have been standardised across indoor and outdoor sites to make them easier to understand, and that concessions would continue to be provided to those who need them.

This is a sorry state of affairs, these people have paid all their lives in Newport and they are still paying for enjoyment and relaxation. It is all down to the 2010 ryder cup and the amount of money newport has spent on tarting up the town and the price of this tarting up,the people who matter have to pay,for the councils mistakes again.

The majority of the pensioners in our area can in no way be classed as wealthy. To means test such a facility is bizarre. The person who sugeested this should be ashamed. Just for the record, I am 41 - not a pensioner and am not (currently!!!) a user of this facility before anyone suggests I am one of the affected people and are having a whine to protect my interests.
Remember, you will all be old one day.
