Council parking saga referred to watchdog

A COMPLAINT about the residents' parking orders saga in Newport is being made to a council watchdog.

Stow Hill councillor Peter Davies has asked the Local Government Ombudsman to investigate whether the city council is guilty of gross maladministration.

It follows a long-running dispute between the authority and Gwent Police over the legality of residents' parking areas in the city.

Last year, the council took the decision to revoke all existing permits for more than 65 streets in the city and make new orders.

But efforts to come up with a new scheme were also dogged by delays as the council and police tried to resolve some minor issues.

"An agreement has now been reached between the council and police and a report is due to be submitted to the relevant cabinet members shortly," said a spokesman for the authority.

Cllr Davies said despite the fact that Gwent Police had assisted the council, it had still not produced legally enforceable orders at this date.

He has asked the Ombudsman to rule on whether "this dilatory behaviour amounts to a case of gross maladministration by the city council, especially bearing in mind that residents are still being charged £10 for their residents parking permits".

One man, who recently renewed his permit, agreed it was frustrating situation.

The Maindee resident lives near the police station and often cannot park near his own home.

"I go out for an hour and when I come back I have to park in the next street."

He added he just wanted the orders back in force.

Newportt City Council's slowness in dealing with their resident's parking screw up,is only matched by its slowness in dealing with the problem of Artics using Mellon St.
