First Gwent trainee cops to pass out

ELEVEN Gwent police probationers will next week become the first officers to complete a new training programme.

Police training used to be done in regional centres run through the Home Office.

But in the biggest training shake-up in 60 years, police forces are now training their own officers in-house.

The first intake of Gwent probationers finish their training on Tuesday.

They have spent two years covering training including neighbourhood policing, criminal investigation, crime scene techniques, including 18 months on operational duties at police stations.

Chief Inspector Steve Thomas, head of learning and development said: "The force has worked hard in setting up the probationer training programme and one of the main benefits has been the ability to train probationers within the community they will now serve.

We have been able to add a local angle to the training and have used local volunteers to take part in role play exercises."

After Tuesday, the eleven new officers will then decide whether they want to progress into specialist roles or go for promotion to Sergeant.
