PAUL Carrack’s name has always been associated with quality music and his recent visit to St David’s Hall was no exception.

The evening got off to a great start with music from Tinlin, aka Alex and Rolf, two brothers who not only specialise in writing songs together but also produce honest and well-crafted folk-rock music .

As well as treating the audience to original songs such as I Keep My Eyes Open, Steal and A Shadow of a Man there was also the chance to hear a new song from the boys Small-Town Blue, demonstrating their excellence as a formidable songwriting team.

The enormity of Tinlin’s talent set the pace for greater things when the artist famously dubbed asThe Man with the GoldenVoice took to the stage with his band.

Paul Carrack delighted the audience from the offset, mixing upbeat songs from his new album Good Feelin’ with classic hits from his rich, yet diverse musical career.

New songs such as From Now On, If I should Lose Your Love and the soulful tribute to Ray Charles I Can Hear Ray were mixed in with wonderful highlights from Paul’s past including Better than Nothing and Squeeze’s Tempted.

Carrack’s versatility on stage was ever present as he changed from guitar to keyboards (and occasionally melodica) with ease while his band provided sterling support evolving several performances into a feel good groove.

Highlights included a rendition of the Mike and The Mechanics hit The Living Years of which someone near to me rightly observed as “a cracking performance!” and the audience getting up on their feet for Ace’s How Long?

Carrack’s encore included further delights such as Over My Shoulder andThe Isley Brothers’ Harvest For The World. Undoubtedly an evening no-one in attendance will ever forget.
