The Smile Off Your Face, Sherman Theatre

Bound, blindfolded and in a wheelchair, I was transported to distant worlds, far-forgotten memories and involved in a production by Ontroerend Goed designed to tantalize the senses.

These senses were heightened as I was wheeled around, my hearing picking up movements around me, while the soundtrack of the journey creating feelings of being crowded at times and in isolation at others. Smells wafted under my nose and the touch of a hand on the back of my neck became suddenly very intimate.

Someone spoke of life, love and regret and I felt safe in their company.

The Smile Off Your Face was a fantastic production that I would recommend everyone to participate in, a chance to experience theatre in an unusual but spectacular way.

It was amazing how readily the audience accepted the world in which they were placed, feeling both vulnerable yet safe in the hands of their performing captors for the duration of the 30-minute piece.
