Star Wars: The Clone Wars (PG) *** Matt Lanter, Ian Abercrombie, Samuel L Jackson, Christopher Lee and Anthony Daniels.

JUST when you thought it was safe to return to the cinema without having to face the spectre of another Star Wars film, George Lucas is at it again.

To be fair to the animated The Clone Wars, which it is claimed was made as an afterthought to a TV series which has already been produced and is ready to be aired, it is not a bad effort at all.

It’s fast, harmless fun but, ultimately, completely forgettable.

The film makes no bones about aiming for a much younger audience and the inevitable result is a much lighter touch and more slick action.

No bad thing many will no doubt think.

The action takes place between Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith as The Clone Wars rage between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic.

When Jabba the Hutt's son, Rotta the Hutt, is kidnapped, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi as sent by the Jedi Council to find him.

Yoda sends Ahsoka Tano along as Anakin's apprentice as Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress wait in the wings to cause more chaos.
