WOW, so glad I went! That was my comment just as these fine Japanese entertainers packed away their drums for the next leg of their mammoth UK tour.

I’ll own up to going along to this show with a real fear I’d enjoy it for 20 minutes before feeling totally drummed out for the next fortnight . How wrong I was.

Yamato Drummers are one of several touring ‘Taiko’ drum groups from Japan, bringing a pulsating brand of percussion to global audiences. The night opened with the supremely fit performers – male and female – showing just what they are capable of with the ancient Taiko drums. Like a top Test cricket batsman they all showed not only the equivalent of huge sixes but delicate fours and quick singles, always enough variety of power and pace to keep the audience guessing as to what was coming next.

As well as showing off their mind-boggling fitness, the performers showed plenty of humour – with mock drumming competitions and interaction with the crowd. It wasn’t all about drums either, a clever routine with hand-cymbals also delighted the audience.

But it was the pounding of the Odaiko drums, one measuring six foot or so across, which stole the night.

Yamato Drummers are regular global tourers – next time they’re in South Wales you’d be mad to miss them.
