The Christians 25th anniversary tour coincided with the Olympic Torch’s arrival in Cardiff on Friday evening. But the historic events going on in the City didn't detract from the bands gig at the Globe.

Porthcawl singer/songwriter Nick Ward opened with a half hour set of guitar driven songs including original material such as Said It Again and Follow the Sun and a fabulous edgy interpretation of The Animals’ Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.

The latest line up of The Christians fronted by original vocalist Garry Christian appeared on stage just after 9pm. Garry was joined by Joey Ankrah, Neil Watson, Lionel Duke, Clifford Watson and Mike Trigg all of which meticulously recreated The Christians trademark synth/harmony sound.

Taking the audience through their greatest hits including Ideal World, Hooverville, Forgotten Town and Words, the band also performed songs from their forthcoming album Speed of Life and a memorable version of The Beatles’ Here Comes The Sun.

Garry frequently joked with the audience and was clearly pleased by the packed venue saying : “Next time we come to Cardiff, will you bring your mates with you?” to which the audience dutifully cheered.

Rounding off a 90 minute set the band returned to the stage with Garry proclaiming “Lets Raise the Roof” and the audience dutifully responding with rapturous applause as The Christians launched into The Isley Brothers “Harvest for the World”.

The Christians proved why their timeless music still lifts the soul after 25 years; let’s hope it’s not too long before they return to Wales.
