This is the busiest time of year for booking holidays, as sunshine seekers across the UK are looking to bag a bargain break away.

But with 53 per cent choosing to book the same holiday year on year, we are in danger of becoming a nation of groundhog holidaymakers.

New research released by Homestay.com, the home of experience travel, reveals that despite over a predicted 37,000 of us booking a summer holiday today, the average Brit is stuck in a holiday rut, only exploring up to five per cent of the world.

A further quarter of Brits have taken this one step further by revealing they’ve never holidayed abroad despite 40 per cent considering themselves adventurous travellers.

And it’s not just the average Brit who can’t break out of their groundhog holiday cycle.

Despite having the cash and kudos to adventure wherever they please, Simon Cowell can always be found in Barbados, Kate Moss in Ibiza and Mariah Carey in Aspen. And Dubai seems to be the default destination for footballer’s wives with the likes of Abbey Clancy, Colleen Rooney and Louise Redknapp returning year on year.

While countries such as France (63 per cent), Spain (55 per cent) and Italy (47 per cent) remain Britain’s top holiday destinations, countries such as Anguilla, Bhutan, Greenland and Madagascar remain unchartered territories.

Nearly a quarter (22 per cent) of Brits named The Northern Lights as their most desired destination.

The research also revealed:

· The South-West is the home of the groundhog holiday maker with two-thirds returning to the same destination year on year

· Forty five per cent of men believe they’re adventurous, yet a third would opt for a package holiday compared to a fifth of women who would prefer an adventurous holiday

Alan Clarke, CEO of Homestay.com, said: “There’s so much world out there to see and it seems a real shame that we’ve just explored five per cent of it because we’re visiting the same places year-on-year.”

Homestay.com offers people the perfect way to get to know the area. Offering guests the unique opportunity to get under the skin of the place they’re visiting because the host will act as their local tour guide, introducing them to the local area and amenities.
