AS Wales positions itself as the top destination for adventure in 2016, some of the country’s best kept secrets have been highlighted by Parkdean Holidays as the award-winning holiday park operator releases a collection of gems which can be found on holiday in England, Scotland and Wales in 2016.

Hidden treasures found on or nearby the 24 holiday parks include unusual or endangered animals, historic facts and revelations that blockbuster films were made within striking distance of the beautiful parks.

Pendine Sands, one of the two Parkdean parks in Wales, is found near the Pembrokeshire coastline and has a seven mile long beach which has been a mecca for motor-enthusiasts looking to break land speed records for decades.

Top Gear filmed a programme on this iconic beach and in May 2015, British actor Idris Elba broke the ‘Flying Mile’ record, reaching a top speed of 206mph in a £175,000 Bentley Continental GT – breaking Malcolm Campbell’s record set in 1927.

Over at Parkdean’s second welsh holiday park Trecco Bay, which is the perfect base for exploring the Glamorgan Heritage Coastline, there is a wealth of history to be discovered.

Take a walk along Porthcawl promenade near the park, which was originally built in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, or head to Newton beach and hunt for treasure. Many visitors with metal detectors have found pieces of memorabilia from WWII, when the American’s used this beach for artillery training.

A trip to nearby theme park Coney Adventure might feel like a modern day activity but the venue, which offers a fun day out, was originally created for US soldiers in WWII to remind them of home and was named after the famous fun fair on Coney Island in America.

Being one of the largest holiday parks in the UK means Trecco Bay hosts some interesting large-scale events.

One of them, the Elvis Festival, sees hundreds of Elvis fans gather each September and is a highly-anticipated date in the Parkdean calendar. During the 2012 festival the world record was broken for the largest gathering of Elvis impersonators, with 814 counted in total, the record has however since been beaten with 895 impersonators gathering in Cherokee, in the United States.
