When it comes to having a really good family holiday, staying at Crealy Meadows Caravan & Camping Park in Devon is really quite hard to beat.

That's exactly what we discovered when we travelled down the M5 to the holiday park, a two-minute drive from junction 30, with three children aged four, seven and eight in tow.

We received a very warm welcome at the reception where we collected our security pass for vehicle access to the site and access via the 'secret gate' to Crealy Great Adventure Park.

The reception area has a little camp shop which stocks everything you need for a short stay from loo roll and matches to sausages and baked beans.

We were staying in a Zambezi safari tent, our first glamping experience - and what an experience!

The tent sleeps up to eight and comes equipped with a double bed in a cupboard off the main living area, doors leading through into a bunk bedroom, a separate double bedroom and a sofa bed in the living area.

There was a comfortable living area with dining table and chairs and a small kitchen with a Belfast sink, plenty of cupboard space, crockery, cutlery, toaster, kettle and fridge with a small freezer compartment.

One of the highlights of this safari tent was the wood burning stove in the centre of the living area - an excellent source of heat on the chilly evenings. Kindling and logs are provided, but it’s a good idea to take matches, firelighters and plenty of old newspapers to get the fire going. The tent had a small decked area in front with a barbecue and table and chairs and a parking space.

The pitches are very spacious, giving campers a little privacy, with plenty of well-kept grass surrounding them for the kids to play safely.

The park also boasts a playground which can be seen from most pitches.

The safari and medieval tents are more expensive, especially in peak season, but the park also offers pitches for touring caravans and tents and this is an option we’ll be considering in the future.

The washroom facilities are a stone’s throw from all pitches and are clean and warm with under-floor heating. The family bathroom with bath is ideal for families with small children and the shower cubicles are very spacious with shelves and hooks to keep your clothes dry. The toilets and washbasins are cleaned regularly and soap and toilet tissue is always available.

While we were there, there was plenty going on for the children to enjoy. Mine tried their hands at Own a Pony – a two-hour session of grooming and feeding a miniature pony and taking part in the gymkhana games to win a rosette.

One of the highlights of the stay was access to Crealy Great Adventure Park through the secret gate from Crealy Meadows.

This adventure park is perfect for kids of all ages. Most rides are accessible to children 92cm and over.

The park offers a good mix of thrilling rides like the Maximus rollercoaster, Tidal Wave water ride, the Vortex water slides, the Flying Dutchman Pirate Ship and the Flying Machine swings, where the staff whoop and cheer until they’re hoarse, to gentler rides like the Carousel, Safari Train and the Honey Swing.

Plenty of indoor play areas offer shelter from showers including Buddy Bear’s Kingdom for the under fivess with Buddy and Blossom, the park mascots, the Lost World of Atlantis with the Dolphin Drop, Shark Bay and Neptune’s Tea Cups, Blue Lagoon soft play and a small snack bar.

We spent several hours in the Adventure Zone with its death-defying, vertical drop slides and a huge soft play and sports area as well as a cafe offering fast food and drinks.

Animal lovers can visit Meercat Manor, Pets Paddock to handle guinea pigs and feed goats and sheep, Bugz Unlimited for close encounters with ants and cockroaches and Animal Land with its ponies, llamas and alpacas.

Dino Dig, Super Subs, Junior Quad Bikes, the Soak Zone, Aqua Blasters, Crealy Grand Prix, Dino Jeeps and the Arcade all offer hours of entertainment too and the Wild West is a must with its network of high slides, rope walkways and Dead Man’s Drop slide (if you dare!).

We had a fantastic weekend of fun in the beautiful Devon countryside at one of the best parks we’ve visited. It’s fair to say the friendly, helpful and ever enthusiastic staff are right when they say you’ll have a “Crealy Great Day”. We’ll be back soon!
