Bideford Bay, Devon, is conveniently located between Bideford and the picturesque village of Clovelly. Ceri Garner-Jones headed to the site for a fabulous half-term break.

Bideford Bay is approximately three hours by car from South Wales depending on traffic and the time of day. We arrived at the Park Resorts site at 9pm on a Friday. Fortunately, our late arrival was no problem – we simply picked up our accommodation pack from the bar at the Manor House venue on the site.

Our accommodation for three nights was a lovely ‘Gold’ standard caravan, located in the Manor Park area of the site.

It was well furnished with plenty of seating in the lounge, a flatscreen television, a fire and a table with seating. The kitchen was well appointed with fridge, oven, hob, microwave, toaster and kettle and plenty of cupboard space. We were advised to take our own tea towels, washing-up liquid and cleaning products, but you will find there is no need to take your own crockery as there are plenty of bowls, plates, cups, glasses and cutlery for you to use. There is also an impressive range of cooking utensils.

Our caravan was divided into two sections – the first being the open-plan part with lounge and kitchen. The second section featured a well-appointed family bathroom with a large shower and plenty of shelves for storing your toiletries. There was also a twin bedroom with a wardrobe and mirror. Finally we had a master bedroom with a large bed, dressing table and double wardrobe. There was also a small en suite.

This caravan was perfect for our family of four. There was plenty of space for the children to play with their toys. Additionally, we hired a travel cot and highchair for our youngest child which made life much easier.

The site features a range of different types of caravans and chalets ensuring you’ve got plenty of choice, whatever the size of your party. The caravans and chalets are nicely spread out, allowing you plenty of space and privacy. There are also lots of parking spaces ensuring you can unpack and not have to walk too far to your accommodation.

The site itself is really peaceful and very picturesque. There is plenty of greenery and there are stunning views of the Bristol Channel and the Welsh coastline. You will need to leave the site to go to a beach, but this is no problem – the Blue Flag beach of Westward Ho! is situated very close by.

The Manor House is Bideford Bay’s entertainment hub with nightly activities including bingo, dances and games. It also has a lovely restaurant, The Boathouse, serving a range of food. Also in the Manor House you’ll find soft play, slot machines and a swimming pool and just outside crazy golf, an all-weather sports court, another swimming pool, a mini assault course and an adventure play area. The site even offers entertainment tailor-made for younger guests with various organised activities.

We had a lovely time exploring both the site and the local area. We visited the unique village of Clovelly. You park at the top of the village and then go through the visitor centre where you pay a fee to enter the village. It is very steep and cobbled so pushchairs are not recommended. You can visit a number of locations including a fisherman’s cottage and two churches. You may even see some of Clovelly’s famous donkeys. There are places to enjoy snacks, meals or a cream tea as well as souvenir shops. As you descend further you finally arrive at the harbour which features a hotel, shop, lifeboat launch station and a beautiful waterfall. Legend has it Arthurian magician Merlin was born in a cave behind the waterfall. There is a taxi service for those who don’t want to face the steep walk back up.

Also close to Bideford Bay is ‘The Big Sheep’, a fantastic destination for a fun, family day out. Hailed as ‘One of Devon’s largest all-weather attractions’, there are plenty of things to do. There are live shows including sheep racing and duck trials, as well as the opportunity to meet many farmyard animals. There are 25 attractions in all and this includes rides such as Piggy Pull, The Swan Lake Ride and The Twister. My husband and daughter enjoyed the latter, flying through the air in this high-swings rotating ride. There are also places to eat and we had a lovely meal in Shepherd’s Restaurant. A fabulous day out and thoroughly enjoyed.

Our trip to Devon was great and our stay at Bideford Bay was the icing on the cake. The caravan was ideal for what we wanted and as we found out, the site itself was perfectly located for fantastic days out.
